A long time ago God noticed that humans were bored (this is a middle eastern story). So he sent them and Ugliness, who happened to be two women. Images of hildegard of bingen. Ugliness was in rags — not pleasant to look at and morally despicable. Beauty was splendidly dressed, and her outer good looks were matched by inner harmony and goodness. The two women started their journey together. They had to cross a desert and walk a long, long time before reaching humanity. Towards the end of the journey they were tired and hot; they passed by a lake, so Ugliness said: how about a swim? Beauty agreed. They got undressed and left their clothes on the shore. Beauty swam far away, but Ugliness stayed near the shore. As soon as Beauty was out of sight, she got out of the water, took Beauty’s clothes, and went on by herself. When Beauty swam back, she realized she had been robbed. She was left with the rags; so she wore them. That is how Beauty and Ugliness came to humanity: each with the other’s clothes. And from then on we humans have been left wondering. Article continues after advertisement Yes, it is not easy to define “beauty” with precision, so you won’t find much research under this heading. That is too bad, because, after all, beauty is a basic human experience in all cultures. What you can find, however, is research on the benefits of listening to music or studying a musical instrument, contact with nature, going to concerts and exhibitions, reading fiction, being exposed to beautiful images after surgery, writing poetry, singing, walking in the forest, spending time in pleasing architecture. Could all this come under the heading of “beauty”? In my opinion it does, although other factors are part of the equation in some of these examples — for instance, social contact and physical movement. In my work as therapist I often ask people what their experiences of beauty have been. Sometimes they are surprised, thinking they are just supposed to complain about how unhappy they are. Many of them are too busy for beauty; or they underestimate it; or they think they do not deserve it. But just about everybody manages to remember some episode. And when they start to talk about beauty in their lives, however troubled they may be, their changes, they visibly relax, their voice lowers, they smile, they breathe more easily, and their eyes sparkle. It’s an amazing transformation in just a few seconds. They mention beauty in nature and art, and the inner beauty of people — the beauty of and, for instance; even the beauty found in the banal circumstances of everyday life. Undervaluing the power of beauty is a tragic mistake.
